Fortaleza, State of Ceará, Brazil, we accomplished a descriptive field research
using a triangulation of methods. We promoted semi-structured interviews and the
application of questionnaires containing the Malasch Scale. The studied population
was integrated by 76 dentists registered in the CRO-CE (2003) specialized in
odontopediatrics and the sample was represented by approximately 50% of that
population. We promoted 4 interviews and received 38 answered questionnaires.
The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed through the categorization
of the obtained data and the questionnaires were evaluated through the software
SPSS for Windows (version 9). After the discussion and confrontation of the
quantitative and qualitative data we concluded that the odontopediatricians in
Fortaleza present a high global level of burnout (54,89) when compared to other
professional categories of the health area, showing the lack of professional
accomplishment (39,73) as the greatest responsible for that high level and the
depersonalization (2,36) as the factor that less contributed to its uprise. Contrary to
our expectation, we didn't find any relationship between the lack of professional
accomplishment and the kind of patients (children) assisted but, nonetheless, with
the personal devaluation and the parents' recognition and also with the low wages
related to that professional specialty. These problems are not exclusive of the
odontopediatric area and it would be interesting to extend the study to the whole
odontological class as a means of health/sickness diagnosis within that
professional category.
