This interaction will promote the development organization in all its aspects. Failures in that constitution process may cause disorders in the child development. In this context, the objective of the survey was: to investigate the primipara mothers' understanding of their children's development process and describe the impact of educational actions on such mothers' behavior changes. The methodological path had a qualitative approach that was characterized as participating survey. Subjects in this study included seven primipara mothers with children in the age range of 4-12 months, whom participated in the survey between February and May 2008 in Prof. Maurício Matos Dourado Family Health Center. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews, observation, field log and recordings during seven weekly educational workshops. Results were analyzed and reflected under those principles that guide Bardin's analysis techniques, which gave rise to the following categories: He/she grows up healthy; he/she is smart and wants to take everything; weeping is different; I saw the need to care more for my child. Regarding child development, it is understood that this perception was initially restricted to physical growth, nutrition and weight gain; mothers perceive their child development in terms of motor skills, and recognize weeping reasons and differences. With respect to educational workshops, participation was active and based on formulated knowledge, and the positive reinforcement of this process made them fit for maternal care, as they perceived that development is a continuum, an activity that covers all psychosocial aspects. The transcendence of this discussion evidences that mothers' perception of their child development leads to stimuli adequate for this child health process. The study also reveals that promoting that population health with the assistance of educational workshops will encourage actions that will make infant-mother interaction easier, provide primipara mothers with knowledge on child development, and is an approach that should be disseminated as an educational proposal, given that actions will be recognized and will certainly strengthen health promotion.
