A defesa dos direitos da mulher e a erradicação de todas as formas de discriminação e violência constituem compromissos dos estados democráticos de direito. Dentre os tratados ratificados pelo Brasil merecem destaque a ?Convenção da Organização das Nações Unidas sobre a Eliminação de todas as Formas de Discriminação contra a Mulher? ? CEDAW e a ?Convenção Interamericana para Prevenir, Punir e Erradicar a Violência contra a Mulher?, que tratam especificamente dos direitos das mulheres.
