Workplace bullying consists of situations in that one or more workers is submitted to
persistent negative behaviors, such as humiliations, persecution, discrimination and illtreatments
in the work situation, where they cannot defend themselves, being an insult
to the worker's dignity. A quanti-qualitative research was performed in a sample of
workers of the state of Ceará. The data were collected through questionnaire application
in 218 workers that awaited service in the regional governmental inspection agency -
DRT/Ce, and through semi-structured interviews with five workers. In the study, two
different strategies for measuring bullying were used and compared. When supplied
with a definition of bullying, 12,9% of the participants perceived themselves as victims
of bullying in at least in a weekly bases, in the last six months. However, when bullying
was measured through the frequency of responses in the Negative Acts Questionnaire
(NAQ), containing a list of 22 potential bullying negative acts, 66,9% of the workers
report at least a negative act at least in a weekly bases in the last six months. The acts
more frequently reported were ?being subject to shouts and aggressiveness?, ?constantly
reminded of mistakes? and ?spreading of rumors about oneself?. When questioned
about other behaviors they considered as negatives acts in their workplace, ?no
compliance of labor laws?, ?pressure to work extra hours? and ?intimidating and hostile
attitudes from managers? were more frequently mentioned as common behaviors
occurring in their workplaces. The semi-structured interviews revealed a tendency to
"naturalize" the unjust acts suffered in the workplace, with many negative behaviors
perceived as normal and common. The results show a relationship between the
experience of negative acts and the influences of the historical, social and cultural
context from Ceará in the workplace.
