O envelhecimento já se apresenta como uma realidade nas sociedades contemporâneas, através do rápido crescimento da população idosa, motivado pelo aumento da expectativa de vida e pela redução da fertilidade e mortalidade. A partir daí, mostram-se os desafios desse segmento etário, principalmente em países que não se prepararam para tal tendência social, como é o caso do Brasil. Portanto, pesquisas e investigações são necessárias para que possamos, além de conhecer o novo idoso, contribuir de forma eficaz para que essa fase seja vivida com qualidade e dignidade. Nesse contexto, esta pesquisa propõe-se a compreender os significados da viagem a lazer para o idoso, além de identificar discursos sobre experiências satisfatórias de idosos em suas viagens a lazer, elaborar um mapa de significados a partir da narrativa do idoso e investigar de que forma a viagem traz satisfação ao idoso. Como método investigativo, a pesquisa desenha-se como exploratória e descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa, de enfoque etnográfico. Teve-se como locus de investigação a Cidade de São Luís, Maranhão, a partir de um projeto voltado para o idoso da Universidade Integrada da Terceira Idade ¿ UNITI- São Luís- Maranhão. Como técnicas e instrumentos de coleta, utilizou-se entrevistas narrativas, observação participante e diário de campo; e como técnica de análise utilizou-se a análise de conteúdo de Bardin, para que se pudesse elaborar categorias. A coleta de dados segmentou-se em 03 (três) etapas: a expectativa da viagem, a viagem e a pós-viagem. As categorias de análises e a interpretação dos conteúdos nos indicam que a viagem para idosos é uma atividade que atribui sentido à vida do idoso, estimula processos de autonomia, independência, qualidade de vida e expectativa de vida saudável, contribuindo assim para um envelhecimento com qualidade. A partir das narrativas dos idosos os significados da viagem a lazer transitam entre os termos: prazer, felicidade, ânimo, experiência, novidade, vida, lúdico, aventura, luz, resgate de si, alegria, renascimento, interação, renovação e liberdade.

Aging is already a reality in contemporary societies, through the rapid growth of the elderly population, motivated by the increase in life expectancy and the reduction of fertility and mortality. From this, the challenges of this age group are shown, especially in countries that were not prepared for such social tendency, as is the case in Brazil. Therefore, research and investigations are necessary so that we can, in addition to getting to know the new elderly, contribute effectively so that this phase is lived with quality and dignity. In this context, this research aims to understand the meanings of leisure travel for the elderly, as well as to identify discourses about the satisfactory experiences of the elderly in their leisure travels, to elaborate a map of meanings from the elderly narrative and to investigate what way the trip brings satisfaction to the elderly. As an investigative method, the research is designed as exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative approach, with an ethnographic approach. The city of São Luís, Maranhão, was the locus of the investigation, from a project aimed at the elderly of the Integrated University of the Third Age - UNITI- São Luís-Maranhão. As techniques and instruments of collection, were used narrative interviews, participant observation and field diary; and Bardin content analysis was used as analysis technique, so that categories could be elaborated. Data collection was segmented into 03 (three) steps: the expectation of the trip, the trip and the post-trip. The categories of analysis and the interpretation of the contents indicate that the trip for the elderly is an activity that gives meaning to the life of the elderly, stimulates processes of autonomy, independence, quality of life and healthy life expectancy, thus contributing to a quality aging. From the narratives of the elderly, the meanings of leisure travel pass between the terms: pleasure, happiness, spirit, experience, novelty, life, playfulness, adventure, light, self-rescue, joy, rebirth, interaction, renewal and freedom.
